Nike has long been at the forefront of sneaker design but in 2022 all the big names are vying with the latest technological advancements. The biggest concern for sneaker brands these days is how to make their offerings more sustainable, and rightly so. While many other giants are content to repackage their icons with durable alternatives to leather, Nike offers the Terrascape range.

Terrascape is the name given to a selection of Nike sneakers that use at least 20% (by weight) recycled materials in their composition. But alongside the hardware updates, the silhouettes are also getting stunning visual makeovers. The one that really caught our attention recently is the Nike Air Max Terrascape 97.

The Nike Air Max Terrascape 97 is obviously based on the AM97 silhouette which takes inspiration from the Japanese Shinkansen bullet trains. But, now a far cry from its OG Silver Bullet colorway, the Air Max Terrascape 97 is perfect for summer in a deconstructed light blue outfit.

Starting as the single unit, the Terrsacape 97 features a Nike Grind feature. The speckled finish is the result of scrap plastic fused together to form the Air Max 97 midsole. Above the sole unit is a newly reinforced mudguard which sets the stage for the icy blue color scheme. Stitched to the top of the mudguard is a one-piece fabric upper bearing the iconic structural lines that define the 97.

This lightweight, self-conscious take on the staple silhouette is a triumph in that it shows that recycled updates don’t have to be boring replicas of already-loved sneakers. The new look of the Air Max Terrascape 97 is one of the best colorways we’ve seen for the shoe in a long time; it’s a guaranteed cop for the summer rotation.
