Update February 27, 2023: Following the rumours last year, the first-ever look at the Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 has surfaced. A ‘Pine Green’ colourway has arrived, despite no confirmation from Jordan Brand or Nike SB. According to rumours, the release date is March 17 at skate shops, with Jordan Brand stockists following on March 21.
1980s basketball shoes have turned out to be pretty good for skating, but what about something a little more advanced, like the Air Jordan 4? If rumours are to be believed, that popular model could be the latest crossover for Nike SB and Jordan Brand, whose skate histories are inextricably intertwined.
According to Nice Kicks, the AJ4 is set to become made for skate. Details of this project are scarce, but it seems likely that the basketball shoe will largely preserve its distinct design elements. Its lace ‘wings’, Air sole and big tongue are all certainly conducive for griptape use. It’s also probable that OG-styled colourways will help launch the new limited edition.
This is not the first time Nike SB have dipped into their basketball siblings’ catalogue. The Air Jordan 1 underwent the SB makeover multiple times throughout the 2010s, and all that changed was its tongue label and Zoom Air insoles.
As far as timing goes, 2022 isn’t too arbitrary of a year to release a shoe of this context. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nike SB’s debut, and the AJ4 has been a consistent star in Jordan Brand’s lineup, with no end in sight for releases either.
